Description

A delicious handheld twist on the classic chicken cordon bleu, featuring crispy chicken, melted Swiss cheese, and savory ham, all nestled in a toasted brioche bun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large chicken breast tenderloins (or 2 large chicken breasts, butterflied)
  • 8 thin slices of deli ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 brioche hamburger buns
  • 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 leaves butter lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter for toasting buns
  • For the Honey Mustard Sauce (Optional):
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken by butterflying or pounding to 1/4-inch thickness. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Create the filling with ham and Swiss cheese on each piece of chicken.
  3. Set up a breading station with seasoned flour, beaten eggs, and panko breadcrumbs mixed with spices.
  4. Bread the chicken by dredging in flour, dipping in eggs, and coating with breadcrumbs.
  5. Cook the chicken in heated oil for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown, reaching an internal temperature of 165°F.
  6. Prepare the buns by buttering and toasting in the skillet.
  7. Make the optional honey mustard sauce by whisking ingredients together.
  8. Assemble the sandwiches with mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and the crispy chicken.

Notes

For a healthier version, consider baking the breaded chicken instead of frying. You can also try using different cheeses or meats for variation.
